Weston Gateway, Somerset

Where: Junction 21 of M5, Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset

The Background:

Weston Gateway is a development site off Junction 21 of the M5, close to Weston-Super-Mare and Hinkley Point. It has superb road, rail and air links and has been carefully planned and designed to meet the needs of a range of commercial organisations.

The recently completed Knightstone Housing Association Headquarters is now fully occupied and provides 40,000 sq ft of prime office space. There is also a Greene King pub and restaurant completed and fully open on site. Further elements of the site, which are due to be completed by 2016, include a nursery, Enterprise House (North Somerset District Council) and a Police Response Centre. Future development plans include space for light industrial or office use.

The Development:

MRMU Ltd is developing a 119-bed Holiday Inn Express on the site. It has a prime position at the entrance to Weston Gateway and opposite the Greene King development.

Location and transport links make a hotel at this site ideal for those travelling throughout North Somerset and the West Country, as the site has easy access to and from the M5. The new business park and work on Junction 21 of the M5 are key areas of regeneration for Weston-super-Mare, and the hotel will provide a good alternative for corporate guests, as well as a convenient location for leisure guests visiting the town and wider North Somerset attractions.Growth in passenger numbers at Bristol Airport will also benefit the project as it is on the key transport route south of the Airport.

The Result:

Planning approval has been secured for an 80-bed hotel but the project is currently going through the planning process to change this to a 119-bed hotel. It is hoped that construction will start in 2018.
